CPNE files new writ petition against Sindh government for non-payment of dues to Newspapers
KARACHI – August 13, 2020: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors has filed writ petition on non-payment of dues of newspapers for the period of 2019 and 2020, on which Sindh High Court has directed the Chief Secretary to the Sindh Government and the Secretary to the Provincial Information Department, issued notice seeking response till August 24, 2020.
The writ petition said that due to non-payment of dues by the Sindh government from January 2019 to July 2020, the publications are on the verge of closure because of suffering from severe economic crisis and the media houses, journalists and other workers are also in dire financial straits. Secretary General CPNE, Dr. Jabbar Khattak has requested the SHC in writ petition, that to issue an order to the Sindh government for immediate payment of dues of newspapers and periodicals.
The case was heard by a division bench comprising Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Yousuf Ali Sayyed, while CPNE was followed by advocates; Syed Muhammad Jamil Raza Zaidi and Muhammad Azhar Faridi.
It also should be noted that the contempt of court hearing against the Sindh government is also ongoing for the recovery of past dues by CPNE till December 2018.
